These are attended by the largest congregation of saints, believers and followers of Hindu religion in India and from across the world. Allahabad is also known for its annual Magh Mela (mini Kumbh Mela) and colourful Dussehra festival. 'Prayag' or 'Allahabad' as it is known today is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres of India. Recorded evidence also exists in the revered scriptures - the Vedas and the grand epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as also in the Puranas-of this holy place called 'Prayag'. The present city of Allahabad was founded by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1575 A.D. Realising its strategic importance as a waterway landmark in north India, Akbar built a magnificent fort on the banks of the holy 'Sangam'. Every 12th year during the months of Jan-Feb world famous Kumbh Mela is held here on the banks of the holy sangam. Ardha Kumbh Mela is held every 6th year. The Magh Mela is the annual version of the Kumbh and Ardh kumbh mela which starts every year from Makar Sankranti in Jan. and ends at Maha Shivratri in Feb. Places to Visit Sangam The holy place SANGAM is the place where the threee holy rivers GANGA, YAMUNA, and the mythical SARASWATI merge into one. It offers facinating view at sunrise and sunset. At SANGAM few drops of nector is believed to be fallen making the water truely magical. The place comes alive, during the Kumbh Mela and the Ardh Kumbh, attracting millions of devotees from all across the country. The Sangam is the site for important fares and festivals, the year around. Hanuman Temple The Hanuman Temple is also near the SANGAM, houses the largest unique reclining image of LORD HANUMAN it is believed that the river GANGA rises during the annual floods to touch the feet of the image before receding back. Allahabad Fort The lofty Allahabad fort, built by emperor Akbar in 1583 AD, on the bank of river YAMUNA stands close to the SANGAM. Inside the fort stands the pokished sand stone Ashokan piller dating back to 232 BC this 10.6 mtr high piller has sevral rare edicts. Jawahar Planetarium For a celestial trip of the scientific kind, visit the planitorium its worth every moment here you can take your weight on Moon and Jupiter, a moon model on display. All Saints Cathedral Described as the finest anglican cathedral in Asia dedicated to memory of people of all ages and places who have faith in God , following the 13th century Gothic style, this is a remarkable example of colonial Architecture in India designed by Sir William emerson, architect of Victoria meorial, Calcutta. the catedral still retains the much of its stained glass work and its impressive marble altar. It is also called Patthar Girja. High Court High court was transferred from Agra to allahabad in 1869. Located in an imposing stone building built in 1916. Its chief Justice's Court room is the biggest of all the High Courts of India Swaraj Bhawan It is old Anand Bhawam in 1930 Moti Lal Nehru donated it to the nation and named it as "Swaraj Bhawan" to be used as the headquaters of Congress Comittee. When Gandhiji started Salt Satyagraha in 1930, Allahabad took a leading part at present it houses office of Jawahar Lal Nehru Fund and a children school for creative Art. Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi was born here that room is opened to tourists. Anand Bhawan Several history making events of freedom strugle took place here. today this ancestral home of the Nehru family, houses a museum displaying the memorabilia of the family. One room is devoted to Mahatma Gandhi where he use to stay. Public Library Standing at Alfred park this building was opened as a memorial to the friendship of Lord Thornhill, the then Commissioner of Allahabad and Mr. Mayne, the then Collector. It was called the "Thomhill and Mayne Memorial". Designed by R.Roskell Rayne, this public library is a remarkable example of Gothic Style. The memorial has a lofty tower and acarded cloisters. In 1879 the library was shifted to the present premises, at Alfred park. It has about 75,000 books, besides a treasure trove of manuscripts and journals.
